Richmond free campsite at sunset

Richmond

Richmond sits in the middle of western Queensland, about three hours inland from Charters Towers on the Flinders Highway. It's a small town by any measure, but it sits on top of something remarkable — the bed of an ancient inland sea that covered this part of Australia roughly 100 million years ago. What's left of that sea is now slowly coming out of the ground.

We stopped here as part of the inland run, and it turned out to be one of the better decisions of the trip. The fossicking site is free and open — you just turn up, dig, and see what the ground gives you. The kids found belemnites within the first ten minutes. That changes the pace of a day considerably

Dirt, dust and bones

A copule of days spent digging for fossils.
